The Saxon kingdom of Mercia was ruled from Tamworth in the 8th century, and in 913 Alfred the Great's daughter Ethelfleda established a castle here. Tamworth Castle has a Norman keep and a Tudor Great Hall, as well as Jacobean and later features. It contains a museum whose exhibits include coins minted in Tamworth in the 8th century, when the Kings of Mercia had a palace here. The town hall of 1701 was a gift of Thomas Guy, MP for Tamworth and the founder of Guy's Hospital in London in 1722. The church has stained glass by William Morris. Just south, at Drayton Bassett, is the Drayton Manor Family Theme Park, with a roller-coaster and a zoo.
