Local Attractions
Macclesfield was once the centre of the English silk industry. Paradise Mill, the last silk handloom mill, closed in 1981 and is now a living museum of the craft, with demonstrations and supporting displays. There are also exhibits on silk at the Macclesfield Silk Museum, housed in a former Sunday school. Two very different Tudor mansions are in the vicinity. Lyme Park, north of Macclesfield, is basically Elizabethan but was altered in the 1730s and the interior features Georgian and Regency decorations. Its formal gardens are a delight and there is a herd of red deer in the park. To the south-east is the earlier half-timbered Gawsworth Hall, with a tilting ground (for displays of jousting) and an open-air theatre.
