Local Attractions
The main attraction of this little town, once a centre of silk-weaving, is the Brindley Mill Museum, named after the engineer James Brindley, who designed this water-powered cornmill in 1752. Restored to working order, the mill houses exhibitions on Brindley (who is best known for his work on canals) and on milling. A town trail leaflet, available from the Tourist Information Centre, illustrates the several connections with the Arts and Crafts movement, including windows made by William Morris & Co in two of Leek's churches. At Cheddleton, to the south, an 18th-century flint mill—used to grind flint for pottery glazing—can be visited on weekend afternoons. The poet Rudyard Kipling was named after Rudyard Lake, a reservoir to the north of Leek.
